If you're looking for a last minute summer adventure, look no further than the Etowah River. However, this adventure is not for the faint of heart. The Etowah River trail starts out as a relatively calm kayaking trip but as the trail goes on you are greeted by the abandoned mine tunnel that dates back to the 1800s.
Adrenaline junkies get ready to kayak down an underground river in an abandoned mine tunnel along the river. The tunnel is only about a quarter of a mile but the dark space gets your heart racing. Once you enter the tunnel, the rapids do begin to pick up and get faster as you reach the end of the mine tunnel.
The mine tunnel has been around over 200 years and was once used during the gold rush to mine for gold along the river.
Watch the video below to see what this experience is like.
There are two safety tips that you might want to be aware of. First, wear a headlamp while traveling the tunnel. It's pitch black dark in there with only sounds of rushing water guiding you and the little pinhole of light marking the end of the tunnel.
The pinhole leads to the second safety tip. Before entering the mine, stop and look to see if the pinhole of light is visible. If you cannot see the light that means debris may be blocking the tunnel and you will need to clear it out of the way while you kayak down the river.
