Shawn Mendes Details How Camila Cabello Inspired 'Treat You Better'

Shawn Mendes says “every song” he's written is about Camila Cabello.

Monday (November 23) marked the premiere of the singer-songwriter’s new Netflix documentary, In Wonder. The film, released in anticipation of Mendes’ upcoming fourth studio album, Wonder, recounts the pop star’s globe-trotting adventures on his 2019 world tour as he reflects on his childhood, rise to fame, and his burgeoning romance with the former Fifth Harmony songbird.

At one point during the movie, Mendes makes the surprising revelation of how his song “Treat You Better” came to be inspired by his girlfriend, Cabello.

“We were in New York and my song comes on the radio or something, and the fact comes up that it’s about her, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s about you.’ And I’m like, ‘Everything is about you. They’ve always been about you,’” Mendes recalls in the documentary. “She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ I’m like, ‘They’re all about you. Like, every song I’ve ever wrote.’”

The 22-year-old continued, “And I’m, like, rhyming off the songs. I’m like, ‘Treat You Better,’ like, all these songs. And she’s like, ‘Oh, my God.’ She literally had no idea. This whole time I thought she, like, knew.”

“Treat You Better” was released in June 2016, and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard charts at the time. Prior to releasing the track, Mendes previously linked up with Cabello for their 2015 smash hit, “I Know What You Did Last Summer," and reunited as a couple on last year's sexy summer jam, “Señorita."

Mendes’ new record, Wonder, releases on December 4, and features the lead single “Wonder" and the Justin Bieber-assisted collaboration “Monster.” The Canadian superstar performed the latter record live for the first time at the 2020 American Music Awards.
