New Florida Bill Would Punish Owners Leaving Pets Behind During Hurricanes

Too often during Hurricanes and natural disasters we see pets being left behind by owners. Now a new bill is going through the Florida legislature that would punish owners for leaving their pets behind when a hurricane threatens the state.

Senate Bill 1738, would punish a anyone who leaves their dog tied up and unattended. outdoors during disasters like. hurricane, tropical storms or tornadoes, after there has been a warning issued by the National Weather Service or evacuation order has been issued.

The bill would make it a first-degree misdemeanor to leave your dog behind and could send the person to jail for up to one year and also a $5,000 fine.

This bill could help during future hurricanes, 49 dogs were rescued in Palm Beach County after Hurricane Irma in 2017. Hopefully this bill would put an end to this.
