Sam Smith had nothing but praise for Emma Thompson speaking out against Harvey Weinstein. The singer tweeted early Friday (October 13) morning, âPOWERFUL words from Emma Thompson this morning about Harvey Weinstein. F**king RESPECT!!â
On BBC2âs Newsnight, Emma Thompson gave a blunt interview regarding Weinsteinâs role in casting couch culture was part of a systemic âpublic healthâ and gender crisis. Thompson referred to Weinstein as âthe top of a very particular iceberg.â Of course, just as an iceberg only shows 10% above the waterâs surface, the same applies to dangerous men in Hollywood, Thompson pointed out.
Thompson did not mince her words when she called the former executive out, stating, âI donât think you can describe him as a sex addict, heâs a predator. Thatâs different. Heâs at the top of, as it were the ladder of, a system of harassment and belittlement and bullying and interference. This has been part of our world, womenâs world, since time immemorial.â
Though she had only clashed with Weinstein during the time when Miramax owned Nanny McPhee, Thompson said, âI mean, Iâve just said Iâve spent my 20s trying to get old menâs tongues out of my mouth, you know, because they just thought, âWell sheâs up for it.â So I would imagine that that happens really very regularly, and so perhaps this is a moment when we can say to men and women: âOpen your eyes and open your mouths and say something.ââ
