States People Are Moving To!

As we previously told you, a report by United Van Lines claimed that Idaho is the state where the most people were moving to in 2020, but a new report by U-Haul disagrees.

  • The truck rental company reports that Tennessee was actually the biggest growth state in 2020, topping the list for the first time ever.
  • They made their determination by calculating the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering the state, versus the amount leaving within the year.
  • Arrivals of U-Haul trucks in Tennessee jumped 12% from 2019, with arrivals accounting for 50.6% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in 2020.
  • It’s the first time since 2015 that a state other than Florida or Texas topped the list.

U-Haul’s Top Ten Growth States in 2019

(click here for the complete list)

  1. Tennessee
  2. Texas
  3. Florida
  4. Ohio
  5. Arizona
  6. Colorado
  7. Missouri
  8. Nevada
  9. North Carolina
  10. Georgia
  • As for the state losing the most of its population, California saw the greatest loss of U-Haul trucks.
  • ONE MORE THING! U-Haul also looked at how the pandemic affected migration trends in 2020, and notes since lockdowns began in March, San Francisco and New York City saw the biggest out-migration, not only during the first three months, but throughout 2020. The Bay Area had 58% of their one-way U-Haul traffic be outgoing, while arrivals dropped by 31%. In New York, arrivals dropped 58% from last year, while departures slowed down only because of a limited fleet due to too many trucks leaving the city.
